Community Restore started in 2009. We wanted to organize a group of volunteers to help people in Georgetown Texas. Specifically, we wanted to work on the exterior of peoples’ homes that had a need but didn’t have the ability financially or physically. We have partnered with the City of Georgetown, several Georgetown churches, businesses and organizations to improve homes in Georgetown and one in Bastrop.
We focus one week a year to make exterior repairs. Work includes roofing, painting, siding, decks, ramps, window screens, replacing broken glass, removing trash, brush, and trimming trees. In Bastrop we framed the house from the slab to roof deck in a weekend. The City of Georgetown pays for building materials if the homeowner meets two qualifications; 1) the person living in the home owns it (not a renter) 2) they are current on their taxes.
Volunteer’s ages range from 13 to 86 years old. Some volunteers have handyman skills, but the majority do not, just a heart to help. We have found the best roofers in the group are teenage girls. The guys want to show off and brag about what they are doing. The girls just want to get the job done. Some people are not able to give a full week, so they work what they can. We have Crew Chiefs that run each crew including our cooks. Everyone agrees that the cooking crew is the most important — they feed up to 100 people breakfast and lunch all 5 days..
Above all, we have fun, work extremely hard and try to help those who have tremendous needs
